Religious Education

At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School RE is very much valued as a core subject and an entitlement for all children. We use the 2nd edition of the "Here I Am" Programme of Religious Education as prescribed by the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The children from Nursery to Year 6 study the same nine themes at different levels throughout the year. We currently rotate these themes on a four yearly basis. The content is so structured that there is cohesion and progression in what the children do and learn. At each level, there are a variety of experiences and activities for each learning objective.

For all children the programme will raise questions and provide material for reflecting on their own experience. It will help them to explore the beliefs, values and way of life of the Catholic tradition and where appropriate of Other Faith traditions. For those from committed families, it will deepen and enrich their understanding and living of their faith.

Preparation for the sacraments is undertaken within the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes and St Josephs with key staff from school supporting voluntarily to maintain our strong school/parish link.

Autumn Term

The children have begun the topic of Beginnings. In this topic, the children explore their own and the class’ family roots, recognizing that some families come from different villages, towns and countries. They hear what the Bible says about the beginnings of the human family in Scripture – the roots of everyone and everything, the whole of creation, to be found in God. Each family will shortly receive an overview of the topics that we will be covering through our Religious Education programme this academic year.

12th October 2009 - JUDAISM

This week the children in Year 2-6 have undertaken a unit of work on Judaism. In this topic, pupils learnt about their Jewish sisters and brothers, how they live as a family and how they worship. Next week all of the children will begin the topic of Friends. In this topic, the children explore their experience of the joys and demands of friendship. They learn about the celebration of Baptism and Confirmation, a call to friendship with God.

BIKE IT VIRTUAL ‘BIKE RACE.’ Our bike race has begun and we are making great progress along the route but we need more children and adults to cycle to school so we can get further. At the moment we are about 100th out of 300 so if we can improve on our position it would be great. We may even get to the front! There are wonderful prizes for the winning school so we need to really try!

ADVENT GIVING During the season of Advent our children were given Mission Club boxes to collect pennies for Catholic overseas missions. We were once again delighted with the response. In total, our children raised £378 to help less fortunate children in Nigeria. Thank you for your continued support and generosity with our fundraising.
