Afternoon – Art – Mog the Cat – TOP SECRET MISSION!!!
This week we would like to ask you to complete a very important activity. In July Mrs Hillsdon will be retiring and we want to give her a special gift from Year One. We would like you all to make Mrs Hillsdon a special handprint in the shape of the black cat Mog. Mrs Hillsdon loves children’s story books and one of her very favourites is Mog the forgetful cat. For this project, your hand will be the cat’s body, the pointer- pinky fingers will be legs and your thumb will be the cats tail. You will also need to cut out a shape for the cats head. You will need either some black card or some black paint. Don’t worry if you don’t have any black card at home. We have left some card especially in our school office that you can pick up when you are ready. We are hoping to make Mrs Hillsdon a Cat bunting using your cards.
Full instructions for the black paint hand print can be found on – https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/18891/halloween-crafts-for-kids

Alternatively the handprint cut-out instructions are on –

Handprint Black Cat Craft

Remember Mog has grey stripes, you may have some chalk or grey pencil to draw these on you cat, or you could paint some on with grey paint.
When your cat is finished we would like you to mount it on a piece of white paper and write a massage to Mrs Hillsdon on the back.
Please can the children’s cards be returned/posted back into school by the end of this week so that we can assemble the bunting.
Thank you for your help. We are sure Mrs Hillsdon will love her Mog bunting!

Today we say goodbye to our beloved Mrs Sillitoe, but we know that she will always be with us in our hearts. Please could you keep her husband Phil, son Michael and daughters Caitlin and Charlotte in your thoughts and prayers. Maybe light a candle and have some time for reflection, you may wish to say this poem and prayer together again.

Then share a book together or read Badger’s Parting Gifts. As Mrs Sillitoe loved Harry Potter you may wish to do something related to this e.g. read a chapter from one of the books, watch one of the films or create a Harry Potter themed card or drawing.

Badger’s Parting Gifts- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRTRABhJTbo

 A Prayer to Share

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

Console my sorrow, grief and fear,

Ever this day, be at my side,

To light and guard,

To help and guide.

Amen.

A Poem for Mrs Sillitoe

I give you this one thought to keep,

I am with you still – I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond shine that glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on the ripened grain,

I am the gentle, autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight,

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone –

I am with you still in each new dawn.

Love the Year 1 Team

DAILY ACTIVITY – Monday 15th June 2020

English – Over the next few weeks the children will be learning about Dinosaurs! We will also be continuing to learn about different forms of poetry. A poem is made up of words and some words rhyme. Some poems have a fast rhythm, while others are slow. Your poem can be about anything – a thought, an emotion or a story. Poems can rhyme, use alliteration or rhythm but they don’t have to.

There are some BBC class clips about poetry you may want to have a look at:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjhhvcw#:~:text=A%20poem%20is%20made%20up,rhythm%2C%20while%20others%20are%20slow.

Some poems contain rhyming words! Today you will play a game to test out whether you can match rhyming words.
WHAT ARE RHYMING WORDS? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjhhvcw/articles/zqjgrdm

Rhyming-Words-On-Matching-Jigsaw-Pieces

Matching-Rhyming-Cards

-rhyming-match-quiz-powerpoint-

You may want to have a go at thinking of your own rhyming words. See worksheet: Summer-Rhyming-Words-Worksheet
Extension: When writing poems it is important to remember your rhyming couplets at the end of your sentences. This can be tricky to think of a sentence with a certain word at the end. Using some of the rhyming words from the game, can you think of or record some sentences with these end at the end?

E.g. Water and Daughter
I like to drink water.
Kate has a lovely daughter.

DAILY ACTIVITY – Thursday 11th June 2020

English – Today we will be describing characters from the story! You can choose one of the goats or the troll. In today’s work we want to see you try really hard with your letter formation. Choose two letters that you may struggle with and use today’s piece of work to really focus on forming them correctly.

We would love to see your handwriting from today, so don’t forget to send us a picture on the classdojo app.

Afternoon – Memory Book for Mrs Sillitoe.

The following is a suggestion only. Children and families can make up their minds about whether they want to participate or not.

In the story, Badger had taught his friends different skills which they could now remember him by. Write about or draw a parting gift that Mrs. Sillitoe has left you. Maybe she helped you to understand some of your maths work, or helped inspire your love of reading or helped you to sort out a friendship issue? If you’re not sure, you could write about or draw a picture of a special memory you have with Mrs. Sillitoe.
Mrs. Sillitoe had lots of things she loved… Maths, her dog Bailey, Harry Potter, being funny… Find a way to remember Mrs. Sillitoe. Maybe you could read a chapter of a Harry Potter book, write a funny joke or create a maths challenge for your family.
If you would like to pass on any of your drawings, writing or other ideas to your class teacher via class dojo or email it to us via  admin@ololprimary.co.uk, we will try to compile a book in memory of Mrs. Sillitoe.

Take care and stay safe,

DAILY ACTIVITY – Wednesday 10th June 2020

Today, we would like you to take some time out from your home learning to sit, pray and talk with your families. We ask that you light a candle in your home and share this prayer and poem together – in remembrance of our beloved Mrs Sillitoe.

A Prayer to Share

Angel of God, my guardian dear,

Console my sorrow, grief and fear,

Ever this day, be at my side,

To light and guard,

To help and guide.

Amen.

A Poem for Mrs Sillitoe

I give you this one thought to keep,

I am with you still – I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond shine that glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on the ripened grain,

I am the gentle, autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight,

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone –

I am with you still in each new dawn.

In addition, this visual and audio book is a lovely story to share with your children about loss:

Mrs Sillitoe also loved the band Coldplay and it made her feel really happy when she listen to them. Can you listen to some music that makes you feel happy and talk about it with your family.

Take care and stay safe

Spring Term - Over the Dunes

In English, we have been reading ‘Queen Victoria’s Bathing Machine’. This story links with our History topic of the Victorians.

We have been designing and also building our own bathing machines in school.

We have also been comparing Victorian toys and toys we have now! It was lots of fun playing with the Victorian toys in our History lessons.

This term we are learning about plants. We have been on a tree hunt on our school grounds and we can now recognise deciduous and evergreen trees!

Over half term, children also completed activities about our Science topic – Plants. Zara and her mum got very creative with recycled materials to create some wonderful flowers!

Patrick also shared some photographs of a visit to his Nan’s house where he saw a wonderful bunch of flowers! He also labelled the parts of a plant, good work Patrick!

Congratulations to our Year 1 Best Costume Winners from World Book Day, Little Red Riding Hood and The Queen of Hearts ❤️
