MONDAY

The Cautious Caterpillar

Today we would like you to make a garden diorama for the Cautious Caterpillar Story.  A Diorama is a miniature display model often used in Museums. When we went to Liverpool Museum In the Autumn we saw lots of Dioramas in the Bug House.

The-cautious-caterpillar-life-cycle-of-a-butterfly

Read the Power Point about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly.

The Cautious Caterpillar story takes you through the life cycle of a butterfly.

It will need some caterpillar eggs, a caterpillar, a chrysalis and a butterfly. You may also want to include other characters from the story, like the grass hopper, the ladybird and the bee. Find lots of ideas and tips for making a diorama in this craft tutorial.  You could also use your play-doh or make salt dough models.

https://www.firstpalette.com/craft/garden-diorama.html

Why not spread your wings and take a virtual tour of the Cambridge Butterfly Garden.  When you have finished you can choose any of the Educational activities to complete or one of the colouring pages from the website.

Get them to write one way they can be a good neighbour on the back of it.
Cut it out and make it into a bookmark to keep and remind them of the work they have done about neighbours and how they can be a good neighbour to everyone like Jesus taught us to do.

DAILY ACTIVITY – Monday 13th July 2020

English – The Cautious Caterpillar

!!STORY The-cautious-caterpillar-story-powerpoint

This week our story will focus on change and transition for Year 2. Read the story of ‘The Cautious Caterpillar’. Cautious is a tricky word, which means when we show or take care to avoid trouble or danger.

Cody was worried about becoming a butterfly because she was unsure what to expect. Talk to a grown up about how you feel about going to Year 2 in a new classroom with a new teacher. Do you feel a little bit worried like Cody did? It is normal for us to feel worried about things changing, but just like Cody loved becoming a butterfly, we are sure you will LOVE year 2.

Activity: You may want to write down some of your worries to pass on to your new teacher or even ask Miss Milne and Mrs Almond any questions as they know lots about Year 2 too!

Afternoon – Art – Picasso

Picasso was a Spanish artist who was born in 1881.  He was a very famous painter because his artwork was very different to other artists of the time. He invented a style of painting called cubism and he painted many portraits in this style. You may remember Drawing a portrait in the style of Picasso when you were in Reception and we put your portraits on display in our classroom.  This year you will do the same for the year 2 teachers.   We would like you to make a portrait by playing the Roll a Picasso game.  Below is a video showing you how to play the game and an activity sheet with instructions.

When finished we would love to see your art work on ClassDojo and we would like you to send your portrait to your new teacher with your name on the back. Thank you x

Afternoon –RE: Everyone is our neighbour and is loved by God

Page 7

Read the story from Luke’s Gospel and act it out if you can:-
One day someone asked Jesus a tricky question, “Who is my neighbour?” Jesus answered by telling one of his stories, called a parable (attached).

Samaritans were people who lived in Samaria and in those days, Jews and Samaritans would have nothing to do with one another. They did not get on because they couldn’t agree about what they believed, so they became enemies.
This Samaritan was a good neighbour because he helped the man, kept him safe and made sure the injured man had what he needed till he was better. CAFOD works with our neighbours around the world, no matter who they are or what they believe, to make sure they have what they need. You might like to look at the ‘Helping Our Neighbours’ PowerPoint to show how CAFOD helps neighbours. Follow this link:

https://comeandsee.cafod.org.uk/content/download/20977/146364/version/5/file/Reveal%20Focus%204%2C%20Helping%20our%20neighbours.pptx

Talk about the pictures below and then ask the children to produce a collage to represent the main areas of need (food, water, shelter, health, education) for our global neighbours and compare it to their own experiences. Talk about what makes someone a good neighbour and what we could do to help our global neighbours to make the world a fairer place.

The children might like to record the story of The Good Samaritan in their own words and drawings, saying what he did and why he was a good neighbour.

Have a relaxing weekend! 🙂

Afternoon – Art – Mog the Cat – TOP SECRET MISSION!!!
This week we would like to ask you to complete a very important activity. In July Mrs Hillsdon will be retiring and we want to give her a special gift from Year One. We would like you all to make Mrs Hillsdon a special handprint in the shape of the black cat Mog. Mrs Hillsdon loves children’s story books and one of her very favourites is Mog the forgetful cat. For this project, your hand will be the cat’s body, the pointer- pinky fingers will be legs and your thumb will be the cats tail. You will also need to cut out a shape for the cats head. You will need either some black card or some black paint. Don’t worry if you don’t have any black card at home. We have left some card especially in our school office that you can pick up when you are ready. We are hoping to make Mrs Hillsdon a Cat bunting using your cards.
Full instructions for the black paint hand print can be found on – https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/18891/halloween-crafts-for-kids

Alternatively the handprint cut-out instructions are on –

Handprint Black Cat Craft

Remember Mog has grey stripes, you may have some chalk or grey pencil to draw these on you cat, or you could paint some on with grey paint.
When your cat is finished we would like you to mount it on a piece of white paper and write a massage to Mrs Hillsdon on the back.
Please can the children’s cards be returned/posted back into school by the end of this week so that we can assemble the bunting.
Thank you for your help. We are sure Mrs Hillsdon will love her Mog bunting!

Spring Term - Over the Dunes

In English, we have been reading ‘Queen Victoria’s Bathing Machine’. This story links with our History topic of the Victorians.

We have been designing and also building our own bathing machines in school.

We have also been comparing Victorian toys and toys we have now! It was lots of fun playing with the Victorian toys in our History lessons.

This term we are learning about plants. We have been on a tree hunt on our school grounds and we can now recognise deciduous and evergreen trees!

Over half term, children also completed activities about our Science topic – Plants. Zara and her mum got very creative with recycled materials to create some wonderful flowers!

Patrick also shared some photographs of a visit to his Nan’s house where he saw a wonderful bunch of flowers! He also labelled the parts of a plant, good work Patrick!

Congratulations to our Year 1 Best Costume Winners from World Book Day, Little Red Riding Hood and The Queen of Hearts ❤️
